Zaiviji Ismail (“ZI”) has extensive local and international board and operational experiences in setting up strategies and policies for Companies, developing leadership and meeting shareholders and stakeholders’ commitments.
He was appointed Director of Cement Industries of Malaysia Berhad ("CIMA") since 17 February 2012 and was appointed Chairman of CIMA on 1 April 2018. He is also Chairman of Uniquest Ventures Pte Ltd, India (a joint venture Company between UEM Group and IDFC of India) and its 3 subsidiaries in the country. Apart from that, ZI is also a Director of TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary company of Tenaga Nasional Berhad since 16 October 2020.
Previously, ZI was Khazanah National Berhad’s Nominee Director on the Board of UEM Group Berhad (“UEM”) from September 2011 to March 2018 and Chairman of both UEM’s Board Nomination and Remuneration Committee as well as UEM’s Board Digital Transformation Committee
He had also served on the Boards of the following companies:-
1. UEM Builders Berhad (“UEMB”) and was the Chairman of the UEMB’s Board Executive Committee;
2. PLUS International Expressways Berhad;
3. TIME Engineering Berhad (“TIME Engineering”) and was Chairman of the TIME Engineering’s Board Executive Committee; and
4. Chairman of Dagang Nexchange Berhad.
ZI was with Shell for over 21 years, the last 11 years of which undertaking international assignments. He had been exposed to almost all facets of Shell’s Downstream business, namely, IT, Logistics and Operations, Business Transformation, Training and Learning, Sales and Marketing. Prior to his retirement from Shell in July 2011, ZI served the last 5+ years as Executive Chairman of Shell Companies in Pakistan. He was also the CEO and MD of Shell Pakistan Ltd., a public listed company. ZI was amongst the only 4 Malaysians in Shell Malaysia who had the honour of serving as Country Chairman outside Malaysia. He was also the first Asian expatriate to shoulder the position of Chairman of Shell Companies in Pakistan.
From August 2006 to July 2011, ZI sat on various Boards in Pakistan and Oman, covering energy, health, educational and other sectors. This included 4 public listed companies (plc), two of which he was the Chairman. ZI was also the Senior Director of Pakistan Refinery Ltd for over 6 years and was the Chairman of the Refinery’s Nomination and Recruitment Committee and a member of the Board Strategic Committee. ZI also served as the President of the Petroleum Institute of Pakistan from July 2010 to June 2011 and played a big role on the deregulation of the petroleum sector in Pakistan. He was also a Board member of Pakistan’s Overseas Investor’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Trustee of Pakistan’s Kidney Centre, Trustee of Pakistan’s Centre of Philanthropy and Trustee of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). ZI was also the Director of Shell Oman Marketing SAOG, a plc, and a member of its Board Audit Committee from 2005 to 2011.
In December 2009, the Malaysian Petroleum Club’s Magazine, RESOURCE, carried a special article on ZI titled “Making a Difference Where It Matters” and in October 2010, ZI’s efforts won him Pakistan’s 1st Global CEO Excellence Award.
ZI is an MBA from Canfield University of Technology, England and is a Graduate Member of Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD). Some of the governance and board related courses that he had attended are:
1. Leading from the Chair (INSEAD, Fontainebleau);
2. International Company Directors Course (AICD, Melbourne);
3. International Foundations for Directors (AICD, Melbourne); and
4. Building High Performance Directors (INSEAD/MINDA, Colombo).
ZI is a keen marathon runner and a social golfer. He is happily married to Aziah binti Maulud and they are blessed with 3 children.
